Few player and club relationships in modern football carry the weight and history of Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United. It was at Old Trafford where a raw, flashy teenager from Madeira transformed into one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen, and it was Manchester United he returned to nearly two decades later for an emotional, if ultimately complicated, second chapter. This article traces the full story of Ronaldo’s time at Manchester United, from his 2003 arrival through both spells at the club.

How Ronaldo Joined Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo signed with Manchester United in 2003 from Sporting CP, the Portuguese club where he had broken into the first team a year earlier. United paid approximately £12.24 million for the then eighteen-year-old winger, a fee that stood as an English record for a teenager at the time.

The move came after Ronaldo impressed United’s players and manager Sir Alex Ferguson during a pre-season friendly against Sporting, reportedly convincing Ferguson to push the deal through immediately rather than risk losing him to another club.

Ferguson handed the young Portuguese winger the number 7 shirt, a number carrying enormous weight at Old Trafford given its previous wearers, including George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham.

Ronaldo became the club’s first-ever Portuguese player and scored on his debut appearance against Bolton Wanderers, an early signal of the impact he would eventually have.

The Development of a Superstar

Ronaldo’s early years at United showcased a flashy, trick-heavy winger still learning to translate individual skill into consistent end product. He played a key role in United’s run to the 2004 FA Cup, scoring the winning goal in the final against Millwall, an early trophy that hinted at his growing importance to the team.

Over the following seasons, under Ferguson’s guidance, Ronaldo gradually evolved from a dazzling but occasionally wasteful dribbler into a genuinely clinical, prolific goal scorer.

This transformation reached its peak during the 2007-08 season, widely regarded as the finest of his first Manchester United spell. Ronaldo scored 42 goals across all competitions that season, winning the European Golden Shoe as the continent’s leading scorer with 31 league goals.

That same season, United won both the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League, with Ronaldo scoring in the Champions League final in Moscow. His performances that year also earned him the Ballon d’Or, making him the first United player to win the award since George Best decades earlier, along with the FIFA World Player of the Year honor.

First Spell Trophies and Statistics

Across his first spell at Manchester United, from 2003 to 2009, Ronaldo made 292 appearances and scored 118 goals, adding 43 assists along the way. During this period, he won three consecutive Premier League titles between 2007 and 2009, the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League, and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup.

His combination of individual brilliance and team success during these six seasons established him as one of the finest players ever to wear the United shirt, and laid the foundation for the global superstardom that followed.

The Move to Real Madrid

In 2009, Manchester United sold Ronaldo to Real Madrid for £80 million, a fee that made him the most expensive transfer in football history at the time. This departure marked the beginning of an era defined by his prolific goal-scoring rivalry with Lionel Messi, as Ronaldo went on to spend nine seasons in Spain, winning four Champions League titles and becoming Real Madrid’s all-time top scorer with 450 goals for the club.

The Emotional Return in 2021

After a further stint at Juventus in Italy, Cristiano Ronaldo made a sensational and widely celebrated return to Manchester United in the summer of 2021, twelve years after his original departure. His comeback was met with enormous excitement from United fans, and Ronaldo delivered immediately, finishing as the team’s top scorer during the 2021-22 season despite United’s broader struggles as a team that year.

His second spell, however, proved considerably shorter and more turbulent than his first. Over 2021 and 2022, Ronaldo made around 40 to 54 appearances depending on how competitions are counted, scoring between 19 and 27 goals across all competitions.

While his individual output remained respectable, growing tensions between Ronaldo and the club, including a widely publicized interview in which he criticized the club’s ownership, coaching staff, and overall direction, ultimately led to his contract being terminated by mutual agreement in November 2022.

Life After Manchester United

Following his departure, Ronaldo signed with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in early 2023, in a deal reported to make him the highest-paid footballer in the world at the time. His move to the Saudi Pro League is widely credited with helping attract a wave of other high-profile international players to the league in the years that followed.

Ronaldo has continued to add to his remarkable career totals with Al-Nassr, further extending a professional career that has already made him the all-time leading goal scorer in football history across club and international competition.

Ronaldo’s Lasting Legacy at Manchester United

Despite the complicated ending to his second spell, Ronaldo’s overall legacy at Manchester United remains overwhelmingly positive among the club’s supporters. His first six seasons transformed him from a promising young talent into a genuine global superstar, delivering major trophies and some of the most memorable individual performances in the club’s modern history.

His emotional 2021 return, even though it ultimately ended in acrimony, reflected the deep, mutual connection between player and club that had never fully faded since his original departure in 2009.

Final Thoughts

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United story spans two very different chapters, a formative first spell that turned a raw teenage winger into one of the greatest players in football history, and an emotional but ultimately turbulent second spell nearly two decades later.

Across both periods, his impact on the club, its supporters, and its modern history remains undeniable, cementing his place as one of the most significant players ever to represent Manchester United.
